04 Pest Control Trial

Implemented by: Samito Pereira Assamo and Dra. Luisa Santos, UEM

The efficacy of three botanical insecticides and one synthetic pyrotheoid in controlling two major pests: leaf beetles (Aphthona spp.) and green caterpillar leaf miner(Stomphastis thraustica) were tested.

A completely randomized block design (DBCC) with four replications and four treatments plus control were used:

  1. Control
  2. Cypermethrin
  3. aqueous extract of leaves of Margosa (Azedirachta indica)
  4. aqueous extract of leaves of Tefrosia (Tephrosia vogelii); and
  5. aqueous extract of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum)
For both pests treatment Cypermethrin was the most efficient

The results suggest that the tested botanical pesticides may contribute to reduce the density of the beetle but that they are not effective for control of leaf miners.
